Happy Birthday to Reverend Al Green born this date in 1946 in Forrest City, Arkansas.

Over the years he’s had an incredibly interesting career in mainstream and gospel music. One aspect of his career I find most interesting are some of his duet partners.  In 1989he teamed with Annie Lennox, of the Eurhytmics on “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” for the Bill Murray movie, Scrooged.  In 1992 he matched with the Fine Young Cannibals, and reunited with his former Memphis mix engineer (this time functioning as producer) Terry Manning, to release the album Don’t Look Back.  1994 he and Alt-Country Crooner, Lyle Lovett put their unique stamp on a cover of the Willie Nelson classic, “Funny How Time Slips Away” which garnered Reverend Green his 9th Grammy Award, Best Pop Vocal Collaboration.  Interestingly, that is the second time Al Green covered that song. The first time was 21 years earlier on his 1973 release, “Call Me”.  The pairing I find personally most interesting only because of how many different people it draws together that I enjoy is his version of the Carol King classic, “You’ve Got A Friend” with Billy Preston, who I love. Of course when I hear that song, I automatically hear the vocals of James Taylor too.  Think about that, just awesome!

Al Green accepted Christ through tragedy. Al Green was rich and famous and living the destructive life that so many find themselves in surrounded by alcohol and drug use and in a “relationship” with a woman who was married to another man.

On October 18, 1974, Mary Woodson White, his married girlfriend, assaulted Green before committing suicide at his Memphis home. The incident served as a jarring dose of reality, a wake up call from which he committed to Christ.

Though most of his Christian catalog has been sadly ignored by both Christian and mainstream programers there have been a few occasions  when he made his voice and faith heard including one of my favorite songs of all time “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” which is on his “Soul Survivor” project and found success on both the Urban and CCM Charts in 1987.

So, everything is going to be alright, know that.  Know that no matter what comes and what happens that He has it all under control for those of us who trust Him.

Acts 15:13
The Message (MSG)

12-13There was dead silence. No one said a word. With the room quiet, Barnabas and Paul reported matter-of-factly on the miracles and wonders God had done among the other nations through their ministry. The silence deepened; you could hear a pin drop.

13-18James broke the silence. “Friends, listen. Simeon has told us the story of how God at the very outset made sure that racial outsiders were included. This is in perfect agreement with the words of the prophets:

After this, I’m coming back;
I’ll rebuild David’s ruined house;
I’ll put all the pieces together again;
I’ll make it look like new
So outsiders who seek will find,
so they’ll have a place to come to,
All the pagan peoples
included in what I’m doing.
“God said it and now he’s doing it. It’s no afterthought; he’s always known he would do this.
