I got saved in October of 1988. I was working at a mainstream Top 40 station in Columbus, Oh. I didn’t come from a particularly religious background at all, though for whatever reason, since my senior year in High School I found myself reading the Bible several times a week. When I got saved, I felt compelled, convicted, convinced that for me to be able to know and serve God more, I had to leave my life behind. I was 22 years old, recently married and rapidly climbing the ladder of success and personal satisfaction, what the heck was I gonna do? Today, a lot of people would just assume I would jump the line and go directly to Christian radio but there were two major factors throwing a monkey wrench into that plan.

1) In 1988, I had no idea there was any such thing as Christian radio. That is absolutely the truth, I was not interested in talk, southern gospel and beg-a-thons so I am certain if my radio dial ever landed on them, I was quickly moving on.

2) In 1988 Christian Music Radio was only available in a few markets around the country. The BOOM of Christian Music Radio that saw the format grow by nearly 20% every year for over a decade was a few years off yet.

What did I do? I went and flipped burgers. Funny, I went from a job and position in my chosen career that I was YOUNG to achieve to working a job most people even today look down on and I was absolutely thrilled to do so because I had a purpose, mission, passion and hope that I had never had before.

The first year after accepting Christ as God was full of challenges but one of the sweetest times in my life. Now, when I would open my Bible I would read and things that baffled me before were playing out in my mind like it was a movie…it was just incredible. During this time I became more familiar with Christian Music. Some of my favorite artists included Steve Camp, David Meece, White Heart and Benny Hester.

One song in particular, When God Ran, by Benny Hester would nearly make me weak in the knees. Remember, I had head knowledge of the Bible prior to being saved, now when I heard a song like When God Ran I was starting to grasp the depth of the meaning that the ALMIGHTY GOD OF ALL CREATION RAN AFTER ME!

Thank you Jesus for being a God who loves us so much!!!

Read the words, listen to the song and ponder just how magnificent it is that OUR FATHER LOVES US SO!!!

When God Ran
Written by: Benny Hester & John Parenti

Almighty God
The Great I Am
Immovable Rock,
Omnipotent powerful

Awesome Lord
Victorious Warrior
Commanding King of Kings
Mighty Conquerer

And the only time
The only time I ever saw Him run

Was when He ran to me
Took me in His arms, held my head to His chest
Said “My son’s come home again”
Lifted my face, wiped the tears from my eyes
With forgiveness in His voice
He said “Son, do you know I still love you?”

It caught me by surprise when God ran

The day I left home
I knew I’d broken His heart
I wondered then
If things could ever be the same

Then one night
I remembered His love for me
And down that dusty road
Ahead I could see

It’s the only time
The only time I ever saw Him run

When He ran to me
Took me in His arms, held my head to His chest
Said “My son’s come home again”
Lifted my face, wiped the tears from my eyes
With forgiveness in His voice
He said “Son, do you know I still love you?”

It caught me by surprise
It brought me to my knees
When God ran

I saw Him run to me
And then I ran to Him

(Instrumental)

Holy One, Righteous Judge
He turned my way
Now I know He’s been waiting
For this day

And then He ran to me
Took me in His arms, held my head to His chest
Said “My son’s come home again”
Lifted my face, wiped the tears from my eyes
With forgiveness in His voice
I felt His love for me and then He

Ran to me
Took me in His arms, held my head to His chest
Said “My son’s come home again”
Lifted my face, wiped the tears from my eyes
With forgiveness in His voice
He said Son, He said Son, My Son
Do you know I still love you
Oh He ran to me
When God ran
