Carman – Revival In The Land

In 1990 Carman Licciardello was at the top Carman, Kickstarter,Christian Music, Classic Christian Music Artist
of the Christian music industry with his wildly popular “Revival In The Land” project. Popular tracks included several top songs such as God’s Got An Army, I Got The Joy, A Witch’s Invitation, Jesus Is The Light and of course the title track Revival In The Land which was written by the incredibly talented Keith Thomas who also penned award winning staple songs for the likes of Bebe and Cece Winans, Amy Grant, Gaither Vocal Band, Jessica Simpson and on and on.

Catchy and cliche were the trademark methods used by Carman to present the Gospel. As a result he was an artist whom other “artists” seemed quick to dismiss. A master showman with undeniable good looks, charm and wit Carman had a bit of a reputation with the ladies of CCM.  At one time or another he was romantically linked to the likes of Cindy Morgan, Kathy Trocolli and Kim Boyce.

The last several years, Carman has recorded and toured less while being featured on Christian television with a variety of programs.  Most recently he made jaws drop in the music world when he set a record by raising nearly $400,000 on in less than 30 days on kickstarter.com to underwrite a new studio project and tour.

carman recently raised nearly $400,000 on kickstarter to support his upcoming project and tour

Amazingly, Carman has accomplished all of this after a cancer diagnosis which he seems to be fighting well with an all out assault on the disease that employs medicine, nutrition and Divine intervention.

Between 1986 and 2000, Carman’s music was a standard on the playlists of Christian music stations popping up around the country.  Oddly, many of those same stations did not report that they were playing his music to the various charting organizations because he was hard to identify as Pop, SC, Inspirational or something else.  As a result songs like Revival In The Land and others lack some historical recognition they deserve and as a result that is also the case with Carman as an artist.

In 1991 Revival In The Land won TWO Dove Awards, one for Short Form Music Video and another for Long form Music Video in 1991.

In the center of the caverns of hell, hidden under layers of evil that have thrived for centuries, sits the morbid domain of the prince of the power of the air. Suddenly, a scaly creature disrupts Satan’s ghastly existence with an urgent message. It reads, “Code red problem, conference needed, disaster forecasted!” With a disgusted annoyance this general of evil agrees to confer with his chief demon lieutenant. This is the story of that encounter

Satan: You may enter.
Demon: My Lord Satan.
Satan: State your business and make it fast.
Demon: Sir, we’re having problems of cataclysmic proportions.
Satan: Where?
Demon: In the east sector, sir. The damage is vast.

Satan: Is there something wrong with my abortion clinics?
Demon: No, sir, that’s all fine. We kill 4, 000 unborn a day through, shall we say, surgical removal. It’s selective breeding. We eliminate human life in the name of convenience like the Nazis and the Jews and with the government’s approval.

Satan: Is there a problem with my pet project, television violence?
Demon: Sir, it’s covered, from videos to cartoons. By the time a child graduates high school, he’s seen 70, 000 murders.
Satan: Is this effective enough?
Demon: Sir, just watch the news.

Satan: Is there a disturbance in my false religions?
Demon: No sir, business is booming. Over 40 million are into New Age and Zen. Over 45 million believe in astrology.
Satan: Looks like we’re catching up.
Demon: Yes, sir. Only 50 million claim to be born again.

Satan: Is there a problem with business in general?
Demon: Sir, we’re showing tremendous progress. Teenage runaways, each year a million or more. There’s a teen suicide every ninety minutes and your specialty, drunk driving, will claim more lives this year that the whole Vietnam war.

Satan: Well is there a disturbance in my… What was that?
Demon: Sir, that’s the reason all these demons are on crutches and wobbling.
Satan: What’s going on?
Demon: Sir, that’s what I’ve been trying to tell you.
Satan: What is that?
Demon: Sir, that is our problem.

Satan: Only one thing causes warfare of this magnitude.
Demon: Then, sir, you know what we are dealing with up there.
Satan: Yes, it’s some of those sanctified
Demon: Try blood bought
Satan: Spirit filled
Demon: Saints of God
Satan: Actually
Demon: Presently
Satan & Demon: On their knees in prayer!
Demon: Sir, they’re literal holy terrors. They bind us, cast us out. Then they do those disgusting charismatic jigs. They quote scriptures like the Son of God and, sir, if you don’t intervene we all might wind up in a bunch of pigs.

[ From: http://www.elyrics.net ]
Demon: Sir, that’s the good news. The bad news is the subject of their prayers that threatens our survival. What they’re praying for is causing hemorrhaging in the realms of darkness.
Satan: And the bad news is?
Demon: Sir, they’re praying for revival!

Satan: I hate revival! It just erupts, it’s hardly controllable. At the Azusa street outpouring things got rough.
Demon: Yes sir, and when the charismatic movement hit, sir, we were jumping out of windows with all that “untie my bowtie who stolla my honda” stuff.

Satan: Then I’ll come in like a flood.
Demon: But they’ll say the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against you.
Demon: It’s written in the Word.
Satan: I’ll form weapons against them.
Demon: Sir, no weapon formed against them shall prosper. That’s in the Bible, too.
Satan: Yes, I’ve heard. I’ll hit them with every filthy, lusty thought you could imagine.
Demon: But it’s written, “resist the devil and he must flee.”
Satan: Obviously, the enemy is taking the battle more seriously than we are.
Demon: And that’s very dangerous, sir, especially for me.

Satan: It’s time to launch my final, most vicious attack. I’ll remind the saints of their past- how they were liars, cheaters, manipulators and moochers.
Demon: But sir, you know what will happen if you remind the saints of their past.
Satan: And what is that?
Demon: Sir, they’ll just remind you of your future.

Attention all Saints of God, man your battle stations!
Sound the alarm loud and long to all men of every nation!
We’re kicking down the gates of hell, not stopping till they’re level.
For the sentence of destruction’s on the forehead of the devil.

Lift your hands in victory, this is our finest hour!
For this sleeping giant called the church is rising up in power!
Cry loud, spare not, this lion’s got a roar!
We may have lost some battles, but we will win this war!

We’ve made it through the fire and our faith in God is strong!
We’re a revelation generation with fire in our bones!
We’re filled up with the Holy Ghost, trusting in the Bible!
Fasten your seat belts, saints of God, the world is breaking forth in a Revival!

Revival is coming to our land
The Holy Ghost is moving just like a hurricane
Revival is coming to our shore
Get ready for the moving of the Spirit of the Lord

Last Chorus:
It’s what we’ve been waiting for
It’s what we’ve been praying for
From America to England
From Africa to Spain
From Mexico to China
The Spirit of God is being poured out
On all flesh and there is
Revival in the land!

Classic Christian Music Artist Sales

Several CCMRewind artists continue to impact the week’s top-selling Christian albums, ranked by sales data as compiled by Nielsen SoundScan in Billboard.

At Number 3 in scanned sales this week is newsboys, God’s Not Dead. The project has been on the charts for 20 weeks and moves up three spots from last week when it was number 6.

TobyMac has a project titled Dubbed & Freq’d: A Remix Project where various producers have tweaked some of his most popular recent titles. The project was released on March 26, 2012 and debuted on the Billboard charts last week at number 3. This week it slips two spots to number 5.

Classic Christian Music Radio from the 1980's, 90's and early 2K's.CCMRewind artists Natalie Grant, Third Day, Nichole Nordeman and former newsboys front man, Peter Furler can all be found at the number 7 spot, up three from last week as part of the WOW Hits 2012 (Deluxe Edition)” offering. The project has been on the charts for Twenty Eight weeks.

For a year and a half Third Day has been up and down the sales charts with “Move [+Digital Booklet]“. The project peaked at number 1 and is still all over Christian radio.

On March 26, 2012 former Gaither Vocal Band member, Guy Penrod released “Hymns“. His third solo release after leaving the group. It debuted at number 5 and is currently at number 16.

The soundtrack of the Dolly Parton and Queen Latifa film, Joyful Noise: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [+Digital Booklet] featuring CCMRewind artist Kirk Franklin stays in the top 25 at number 21 after 31 weeks.

And finally…MxPx…the punk trio that helped launch Tooth N Nail records back in the early and mid 90’s with the project Pokinatcha and others released Plans Within Plans on April 2, 2012 and it just debuted at number 23.

As a wrap up I wanted to select one song from one of the Classic Christian Music Artists mentioned above. It was a tough choice but I thought I would share Nicole Nordeman, To Know You which was the top song in all the country back in 1998.

We all come to a point in our walk where we realize just how small our faith is and that we need some sort of boost, evidence or proof that Jesus is indeed real. I’m sorry to say that in most instances, I’ve never seen the proof because the proof would erase my faith and it is my faith my ability to believe what I could not witness and cannot explain that make me know Him.

The following verses share the story of the only ones who actually saw Jesus and believed.

Rejoice! We are blessed to know Him in Spirit and still hope in His return!

To Believe

John 20:19-31
19-20Later on that day, the disciples had gathered together, but, fearful of the Jews, had locked all the doors in the house. Jesus entered, stood among them, and said, “Peace to you.” Then he showed them his hands and side.

20-21The disciples, seeing the Master with their own eyes, were exuberant. Jesus repeated his greeting: “Peace to you. Just as the Father sent me, I send you.”

22-23Then he took a deep breath and breathed into them. “Receive the Holy Spirit,” he said. “If you forgive someone’s sins, they’re gone for good. If you don’t forgive sins, what are you going to do with them?”

24-25But Thomas, sometimes called the Twin, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples told him, “We saw the Master.”

But he said, “Unless I see the nail holes in his hands, put my finger in the nail holes, and stick my hand in his side, I won’t believe it.”

26Eight days later, his disciples were again in the room. This time Thomas was with them. Jesus came through the locked doors, stood among them, and said, “Peace to you.”

27Then he focused his attention on Thomas. “Take your finger and examine my hands. Take your hand and stick it in my side. Don’t be unbelieving. Believe.”

28Thomas said, “My Master! My God!”

29Jesus said, “So, you believe because you’ve seen with your own eyes. Even better blessings are in store for those who believe without seeing.”

30-31Jesus provided far more God-revealing signs than are written down in this book. These are written down so you will believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and in the act of believing, have real and eternal life in the way he personally revealed it.

To Know You

It’s well past midnight
And I’m awake with questions that won’t
Wait for daylight
Separating fact from my imaginary fiction
On this shelf of my conviction
I need to find a place
Where You and I come face to face

Thomas needed
Proof that You had really risen
When he placed his fingers
Where the nails once broke Your skin
Did his faith finally begin?
I’ve lied if I’ve denied
The common ground I’ve shared with him

And I, I really want to know You
I want to make each day
A different way that I can show You how
I really want to love You
Be patient with my doubt
I’m just tryin’ to figure out Your will
And I really want to know You still

Could not understand how You could
Truly free us
He struggled with the image
Of a grown man born again
We might have been good friends
Cuz sometimes I still question, too
How easily we come to You

No more campin’ on the porch of indecision
No more sleepin’ under stars of apathy
And it might be easier to dream
But dreamin’s not for me

Michael English – In Christ Alone

Michael English is one of my favorite singers of all time and he is one of the great stories of redemption within the Christian Music Industry.

In 1995 at the zenith of his success based on his solo release through Warner Alliance and also the work he had done for years as a member of The Gaither Vocal Band, Singing Americans and others, Michael confessed a failure. Michael had become involved with someone outside his marriage, the female involved was Maribeth Jordan who was part of a group First Call.

I may be mistaken but I believe that Michael set a record for the number of Dove awards he won the night prior to his confession. He also returned each of the awards.  From there, Michael spent some time running and beating himself up, he had incredible back problems and began to drink heavily.

THANKS TO JESUS CHRIST for never giving up on us, HIS most treasured creation, Michael is once again singing songs to glorify Christ. sadly, I do not know what happened to Maribeth Jordan but I hope and pray that regardless of where she is or what she is doing, she has reconciled herself to Christ and shares the joy and hope of eternity glorifying the King!

Take a moment and pray for Michael and some of your other favorite artists that Christ will hold and keep them as they share the message and hope of Christ in some of the darkest corners of the world, the church.
